“It’s like being a kid again! So many presents to open, except you know what’s in each one because you bought it! Doesn’t make it any less exciting, am I right?” She picked up our new coffee maker, began walking to the kitchen with it. “I can’t believe you haven’t unboxed this one yet. That would have been my first one, because without coffee, there’s no day. You might as well go on strike and refuse to get up.”
I followed her to the kitchen carrying the wine and bag of gummies, and watched as Lisa unboxed our coffee machine. She tore the cardboard open, the sharp smell of new plastic filling the kitchen. She scanned the empty long bench, then turned to the island, a finger going to the side of her mouth as she thought. She decided on a spot and placed the coffee machine there.
